Immunology Lab (Dr. Silvia Monticelli)

Apostdoctoral position is immediately available in the group of Dr. Silvia Monticelli at the
Institute for Research in Biomedicine (IRB) in Bellinzona, Switzerland
(www.irb.usi.ch/molecular-immunology), to join projects aimed at understanding
mechanisms of regulation of gene expression in immune-mediated processes .

Description
The research topic concerns the study of transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of
gene expression in cells of the immune system. The general goal is to extend our knowledge
of the mechanisms that regulate immune cell differentiation and functions and to disclose
networks of interaction between epigenetic modifications, transcription factors, microRNAs
and their targets. This project offers the opportunity to learn a wide range of techniques in
cellular immunology and molecular biology, as well as to develop independent thinking. The
environment at IRB also favors the exchange of knowledge and ideas through journal clubs,
seminars and talks. Access to state-of-the-art research facilities will also be provided.

Requirements
The successful candidate has recently obtained a PhD degree in a field related to
immunology and is fluent in spoken and written English. Proven ability to successfully bring
projects to completion is mandatory and shown by co-authored publications. At least basic
bioinformatics skills are also required. Previous experience in working with primary immune
cells is preferable, but not mandatory. Applicants should be highly motivated and ambitious,
highly reliable, flexible and ready to develop independent thinking and learn new skills. At-
the-bench supervision of younger students will also be requested. The position is funded
initially for 1-2 years, with the possibility of extension, although the candidate is also
expected to attract her/his own competitive funding.
